Practicing Awareness of God’s Presence

What If God’s Presence Is Something You Can Actually Learn to Live In?

Many Christians have experienced moments when God suddenly seemed incredibly close—a worship service, a retreat, a powerful prayer, an unexpected encounter. But then Monday comes. The feeling fades, everyday life takes over, and we wait for the next spiritual moment. What if we were never meant to live that way?

Neville Johnson was a Christian minister and teacher known for his emphasis on intimacy with God, supernatural spiritual experience, and learning to live with an ongoing awareness of God’s presence. His message here is surprisingly practical: the presence of God can become more than an occasional encounter.

Through consistent time in the “secret place,” we can become increasingly sensitive to His presence—and increasingly changed by it.

The provocative idea behind this teaching is that you don’t just spend time in God’s presence; His presence does something to you.

Johnson describes it almost as spiritual conditioning: the more we learn to remain, listen, and respond, the more our inner life changes. So perhaps the question isn’t, “Why don’t I experience God more often?” Maybe it’s “Have I learned how to remain?”
