Stop Trying So Hard

This is a quick video but it is a very good reminder that we don’t always truly understand the mixed religious messages we receive. The Christian life has often been frustrating and exhausting for those us who sincerely try to do all the right things. Jesus never taught us to “try harder!”

  • The Vine and the Branches: Jesus serves as the vine (the source of life), while believers are the branches. Just as a branch does not exert effort to grow fruit—it simply stays attached to the vine—believers are called to focus on maintaining their connection to Jesus rather than “producing” fruit through willpower (3:02-3:46).
  • Abiding as “Dwell,” Not “Visit”: The word abide (or remain) is contrasted with being a “tourist” who checks in occasionally. True abiding is a constant, daily dwelling with God in all aspects of life, from mundane tasks to difficult stressors (4:03-4:56).
  • The Danger of “Unplugging”: Many people experience spiritual burnout because they try to operate on their own power, like a phone running on a depleting battery. This leads to feelings of emptiness, anxiety, and being drained, signaling that they have lost their connection to the source (5:15-6:38).
  • Apart from Me, You Can Do Nothing: The video highlights that trying to force spiritual maturity without this connection is futile, likening it to trying to make an unplugged lamp glow by polishing the bulb (7:30-7:45).
  • Three Switches for Daily Connection: To maintain this abiding lifestyle, the creator suggests three practical steps:
    1. The Narrative Switch: Letting God’s truth replace the world’s noise before reacting to stress (8:09-8:33).
    2. The Prayer Switch: Moving from “scheduled” prayer to continuous, short breath prayers throughout the day (8:40-9:02).
    3. The Alignment Switch: Viewing obedience as a way to keep the line of power clear, rather than a system of earning points (9:03-9:27).
