Have you ever let a mistaken identity cause you to experience self rejection? What happens when we are deceived to think we are separated from God and then grasp for things that already belong to us? What happens when we continue to cry out to God to solve problems He expects us to fix?
Tommy Miller proposes that the Fall occurred (at least in part) because Eve was deceived that she was something less than her true identity in God. They looked for wisdom outside Source-Yahweh, which involved the dangerous concepts of independence and separation from God. It is through the deception of incompleteness that Adam and Eve reached for something God told them to leave alone. We do the same thing sometimes!
Jesus’ message was that the Kingdom of God had come. He demonstrated what that looked like and then tested the disciples, who only saw the great need and their own imagined inadequacy. Jesus rebuked them for not acting in faith.
Calling out to God to solve a problem He told us to fix is a demonstration of our lack of faith!
So are we willing to learn from the disciples’ reactions of imagined inadequacy? Are we willing to appropriate what God says about us and walk in His power instead of by our senses and our own strength?
