Two Ways of Thinking: Stop Letting Your Brain Boss You Around | Dr. Lee Warren

Your life today is being quietly steered by thoughts you didn’t even consciously choose—and until you notice them, they’ll keep deciding your future for you.

Most of us are living today through mental and emotional programming established decades ago—often in childhood—and we don’t even realize it. Our subconscious beliefs, fears, assumptions, and habitual reactions quietly shape our relationships, decisions, health, and expectations. We think we’re making conscious choices, but much of the time we’re simply repeating yesterday’s patterns—rather than taking every thought captive and allowing the Holy Spirit to renew our minds.

And here’s the tragedy: We can know the promises of God, believe we have the mind of Christ, and still live as though our past has more authority over us than the Holy Spirit within us.

No wonder so many Christians struggle to experience the abundant life Jesus promised—a Kingdom life characterized by righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17).

But our old programming is not our destiny!

Neuroscience confirms that our brains can change through neuroplasticity. We can identify limiting beliefs, interrupt automatic emotional reactions, and develop entirely new patterns of thinking. Scripture takes us further, calling us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2).

Neurosurgeon and Christian author Dr. Lee Warren explains this powerful distinction through two ways of living: Brain Management Mode, where we remain controlled by conditioned thoughts and reactions, and Self-Brain Surgery Mode, where we intentionally participate in changing them.

This isn’t simply about positive thinking, self-improvement, or managing difficult emotions. It’s about awakening to who we already are in Christ and learning to live from that reality rather than from the limitations of our past.

In this short video and accompanying study notes, discover how neuroscience, renewing the mind, and the transforming work of the Holy Spirit come together to offer a radically different way of living.
